The District’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, minimize safety hazards, and teach respect for authority. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, if they comply with the following guidelines:
1. Students are expected to present a clean and well-groomed appearance while in attendance at school and school sponsored activities.
The hem on dresses, skirts, or shorts is to be no greater than four (4) inches from the top of the knee. The only exception to this rule will be at outside extracurricular events. Walking or hemmed blue jean shorts of at least mid-thigh length may be worn. Males should also wear shorts that are hemmed. All other dress code requirements will be enforced.
Appropriate shoes must be worn at all times. No shower shoes or flip-flop style footwear may be worn. Leather sandals may be worn.
Revealing or extreme necklines or armholes (dress, blouse, shirt) will not be permitted. Buttons on shirts will be buttoned with the exception of the collar and first one below. Student’s shirts must be of a length that it could be tucked in if required to do so. Young men’s shirts must break over the shoulder. Sleeveless shirts or shirts with sleeves or sides cut out will not be permitted. Students may not wear tank tops, bare midriffs, half shirts, halter tops, spaghetti straps, camisoles, slip tops or other type of lingerie, or items with provocative, offensive, violent, drug, or alcohol related pictures or slogans. Items, clothing or jewelry depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, skulls, crossbones or a combination of skulls and crossbones are also not permitted. No combination or layering of shirts or the wearing of sweaters, jackets, or tops will excuse this standard. All collars must be worn down.
Students must wear the proper undergarments and any article of outerwear that exposes the undergarments is not permitted. No undergarments can be worn outside as outerwear.
Hats, caps, scarves used as headcoverings or other headwear are not permitted at school unless it is a part of a school uniform. If they are brought, the items will be taken up.
No form of dress that might solicit racial discord or that may be construed as gang related will be tolerated. This includes bandannas worn or shown, territorial shirts, or any other dress that is deemed inappropriate by the principal. Pants must not sag or bag or give the appearance of sagging or bagging. They must be worn at the waist and if there are belt loops a belt must be worn. If shirt tails being worn out creates a problem in enforcing this rule, students may be required to wear their shirttails tucked in their pants. No leisurewear, pajamas, or pants with holes, ragged cuffs or torn knees (either manufactured or torn) may be worn.
Only prescription dark glasses that are recommended for indoor use will be allowed inside the building.
All students should practice good health and hygiene. Young men must be clean-shaven. Male student’s hair length shall not extend below the collar and shall not fall below the eyebrows; or extend below the ear lobes on the sides. Male student’s hair shall not be worn pinned up, clipped up, or tied up. In addition, male students shall not wear their hair in ponytails, rattails, braids or mohawks. Student hair and eye contact choices are restricted to natural human colors. Young ladies make-up is to be of such a nature as to not call attention or be distracting (e.g. black lipstick, extended eye make-up). Bouffant (puffed out) hairstyles that cause the hair to extend more than 3 inches from the scalp will not be allowed. Combs or picks are not allowed in the hair. Male students are not allowed to wear any type of makeup.
Young men may not wear earrings of any sort (this includes Studs). Body and tongue piercing of any sort is prohibited for all students with the exception that young ladies may wear earrings. Tattoos must be covered.
Sweat suits, wind suits, warm-up suits or see through clothing are not appropriate school attire. Sweatshirts are permitted with other types of approved pants. No school issued clothing will be worn to class without principal approval.
The only chains which can be worn are those made to be worn around the neck and which are no more than a ¼ inch in diameter. Chains worn should not depict skulls, crossbones, or a combination of skulls and crossbones.
When a student’s dress is objectionable under any of the above rules, the principal will advise the student of appropriate disciplinary action. The action may consist of herbal warning, detention hall, Night School, ISS or AEP. Students may be sent home to change if inappropriate clothes are worn to school. Any dress code decision not addressed above will be made at the discretion of the principal.
